Why Fiberglass Cloth Is Used for Surfboard Making

Surfboards is used for surfing, and typical surfboard is about 5m long and weighs 50kgs to 60kgs. After the Second World War, foamed plastic panels appeared and the shape of the panels improved. Now, the surfboard is 1.5m to 2.7m long, about 60cm wide, and 7cm to 10 cm thick. The board is light and flat, and the front and rear ends are slight and narrow, there is a stable tail fin at the bottom.
The surfboard floats lightly in the water, the surfers control the surfboard steering, quickly paddle to accommodate the speed of incoming waves, then quickly stand up and balance on the board with the waves. Due to the constant slap of the waves, the surfboard shell is required to be very strong.
Fiberglass cloth is excellent support material, and it’s ultra-light, ultra-thin, cheap, safe and environmentally friendly, so fiberglass cloth is widely used in surfboards making.
The world’s first fiberglass cloth made surfboard was built in 1946, it’s also made of mahogany to connect two hollow molds. In 1949, Bob Simmons built a new type of surfboard using polystyrene foam and resin. However, the true meaning of the fiberglass cloth surfboard was born in 1958. Hobie Alte used polyurethane foam as the core board of the surfboard, and the high-quality glass fiber cloth was covered on the polyurethane foam, and then sealed with resin. This kind of surfboard is lighter, and more reinforced than traditional surfboards.
